Yamaha R15 Version 2.0 launched!

After seeing tons next-gen R15 spy images, Yamaha has finally launched its R15 Version 2.0. What a relief! While maintaining the proven ease of handling of the existing R15, the version 2.0 boasts elegant looks and better performance in circuit riding.

The bike will be available in Racing Blue, Midnight Black & Sunset Red colors. Only ‘Sunset Red’ color of the bike comes with ‘dual-tone’ styling. Version 2.0 has undergone changes as compared to the present YZF-R15 in the specs of the Engine Control unit (ECU), drive-train unit, a long aluminum swing arm, wider front and rear tires (radial tire for the rear), split seat, LED taillights and new-design middle cowl & tail cowl.

Yamaha says that they’ve done changes according to suggestions received from the previous owners of the bike. The design elements are borrowed from the supersport model YZF-R1, which is in turn adapted from YZR-M1 MotoGP race machine.

The notable changes include:

1. Torque figure is bumped up to 15 Nm @ 7500rpm from 14.4 Nm earlier.

2. Wheelbase is up from 1290mm to 1345mm.

3. Seat height is up from 790mm to 800mm.

4. Primary/secondary reduction ratio is now 3.042/3.133 from 3.042/3.000.

5. 90/80-17 tyre for the front wheel and 130/70-R17 for the rear wheel.

6. New & remapped ECU.

7. A larger 220mm diameter rear disc brake.

8. 5-spoke cast wheels.

9. New drivetrain unit & more rigid clutch axle shaft.

10. Aerodynamic resistance value is 4% better than the previous generation.

The bike boats the same old awesome handling capabilities. The wider 130mm radial rear tire and 90 mm front tire impart reduced roll resistance, high-speed cornering stability and improved handling performance. Also, this bike will be the first Indian bike to boast aluminum swing arm in the 150cc segment which has a truss structure that enables greater rigidity while improving handling in the turns. Power figure remains the same as the old R15, however, new ECU should give better low end power, but this will be clear only after we get to ride the new R15.

All these new features come at a premium of Rs.5000 more than what the version 1.0 used to cost. The bike will retail with a price tag of Rs.1,07,000 (Ex-showroom, Delhi). Below is a detailed comparison between the version 2.0 and version 1.0 R15:
